Port Stephens MP Craig Baumann has welcomed funding to improve safety conditions on Nelson Bay Road near the Bayway Village at Fern Bay. The site was the scene of a tragic accident last year involving a school girl. Mr Baumann has, along with residents, been lobbying for improved safety in and out of Bayway Village and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has been investigating possible improvements. "I am pleased that the NSW State Government has provided $250,000 this financial year for RMS to improve safety at this location," said Mr Baumann. “Community consultation was carried out last year to identify short and long term options and RMS is now liaising with bus operators and Bayway Village to determine the preferred solution," he said. “Possible short term safety improvements include the installation of a u-turn bay to the south of the village or relocating the existing pedestrian refuge. “Further consultation will be carried out next month and the community will be notified before any work starts,” Mr Baumann said. Mr Baumann said his thoughts were with the young girl injured in last year's accident, and her family and friends.
